The “Crafted” Designs of FIT's AAS Capstone Exhibit

As an Adjunct Professor at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), it’s an honor to witness emerging designers showcase their creations to the world. This year, the exhibition was called "Crafted," and it featured a unique approach to design that involved using only muslin fabric. As someone who assisted in the set up and attended the exhibit, I was awed by the level of creativity and talent on display. In this blog post, I'll be sharing my thoughts on the Crafted Designs of FIT’s AAS Capstone Exhibit.

The designs were an astonishing showcase of the Fashion Design students' skills and creativity. The use of muslin as the primary fabric was a novel approach that leveled the playing field and allowed each designer's individual style to shine through in their fabric manipulation. Every design was a masterpiece, characterized by unique techniques like burning, pleating, beading, puffing, fraying, buckling, sculpting and embellishing. It was evident that the students had put in countless hours of hard work, and their effort was visible in their final pieces.

There were so many incredible designs that it's hard to single out any one garment as a standout. However, there were a few pieces that particularly caught my eye. One was a dress that had been intricately pleated, each pleat carefully crafted to create a sense of movement and flow. Another was a statement ensemble that had been sculpted and sanded. The finishing techniques on the muslin added elegance and sophistication to the overall design. The ingenuity and technical proficiency of the designers were evident in every piece on display.

I can't wait to see what these students will create in the BFA program. Whether you are teaching, a student, an emerging designer, or simply attending - exhibits like these can be an excellent source of inspiration and motivation. Seeing the creative potential of others can help ignite our own spark and push us to create something exceptional. FIT's Fashion Design Program is world-renowned, and it's no wonder, given the level of ingenuity and talent on display in this exhibit.

The “Crafted” designs of FIT's AAS Capstone exhibit were an impressive demonstration of creativity and technical ability. Each garment was a work of art, and it was inspiring to witness the amount of hard work and dedication each designer had put into their creations. It showcased that fashion design is not just about aesthetics but also about the emotional connection that fashion can evoke in people. The students’ exhibit indicated that they will go far in their chosen careers and tell stories in their designs. It was an all-around avant-garde and fantastic experience to witness such exceptional talent on this level. The exhibit demonstrated that FIT faculty is dedicated to teaching students the value of creativity and innovation in the progression of fashion art.  It was a brilliant reminder that the possibilities are endless with creativity and the use of artistic techniques. Crafted AAS Capstone Exhibition displays a diverse range of talent and an unforgettable experience.
